When should you use a Career Coach?

Jun 01, 2022

I want to get real about what it’s like to use a career coach and when to use one, and also share with you how to find someone you trust.

All too often I hear horror stories of people paying bucket loads of money and not seeing results.

You might have a horror story yourself!

You might have paid for someone to complete your resume or job application but you’re not getting any callbacks for interviews.

You may have had interview coaching but are no closer to feeling confident or winning the job.

You needed direction, but you got an earful of "transferrable skills" speak and no closer to knowing "what’s next" for you.

How frustrating is it when you just get advice that is generic?!

So, if you have a not-so-great experience I want to firstly apologize on behalf of all the great coaches out there and then share with you...

What should it be like to use a career coach?

A career coach should be your biggest champion and cheerleader.

It’s not enough to just help you with your CV or talk through different online platforms to find jobs.

They need to be able to understand you, gently reveal your career blind spots so you can overcome them and...

...most importantly, support you in connecting your innate values and passions with meaningful career choices.

Career choices that actually work with your life, family, and salary expectations.

You should feel challenged yet utterly supported.

When should you use one?

A career coach can be useful at any point in your career!

Helping you choose a path when you hit a crossroads, changing roles or industries, supporting you in up levelling or career, gaining a promotion, or negotiating more money.

Most importantly, it’s a good idea to engage a career coach when you feel your confidence is lacking and you need the support and accountability to make the change you know you really need (but you're just not doing it yourself!).

How do you find someone you trust?

Talk to them!  Check out their social media content, and emails and see if you resonate with what they’re teaching.

Attend any free workshops they’re hosting or simply book a time to talk with them about your career and how they can help you.

Make sure their style is going to suit you.

If you've been reading my emails for a little while now, and you'd like to know what it's like to work with me...

Come to one of my workshops!

It's free to attend, you'll get to know my coaching style and what I offer and make an informed choice about whether I'm a good fit for you or not.
