How to beat age application bias?

May 31, 2022

To start your Monday morning I wanted to kick off with a commonly felt fact.

There is totally 100% application "age bias" and it affects many women when they are applying for roles.

How does it look?

Here's how:

You submit for a role and they tell you "sorry, you're too experienced", or "we found a better fit", or, you just don't get a response.

You're thinking "but I'm only X years old, I have so much of my career left, how could this happen to me?!"

And you start wondering what the heck is left for you?  Are you really staring down the barrel of retirement or staying where you are?

Gosh no.  But it sure does feel like it sometimes doesn't it?

So, if you're thinking you're not getting selected because you're "too old", think again!

Age bias comes at all ages for women...how fun!

Think about this...

In your early twenties, you're considered too young and inexperienced...

In your early thirties, you're considered to be of "marriage and baby-making age" and will probably take too much time off....

In your forties, if you've shown loyalty and been in a certain role or industry "too long", you're considered unskilled for anything new.

In your fifties or sixties, gosh, women are still working?

I know I write this tongue in cheek, but the reality is that every day I'm speaking to women who are really, truly feeling this.

Age bias comes at you no matter what age you are.

It sucks, but there is a way around it.  You don't have to feel stuck each time you hit a new decade.

To combat age bias, what I teach women to do in their applications isn't the same as other coaches.

I don't write resumes the same old boring way.

I don't teach you how to interview the same old boring way.

And I certainly don't teach you how to plan your career the same old boring way.

What I do is teach you how to unleash your potential at any age.

And it comes down to a few key elements:

1) Removing age bias altogether so you're assessed purely on ability and motivation

2) Using a communication method that absolutely wows in your applications
