Feeling like a guinea pig on a wheel?

Jun 30, 2022

I've been a huge animal lover my whole life.

When I was a kid my parents bought me so many different types of furry friends over the years.

Collectively my brother and I had a pet dog, cat, fish, rabbit, mouse (which turned into mice...), duck (my brother rescued it from a market stall), mexican walking fish, and even a horse (thanks Dad for paying for that one!).

And then we had our trusted little guinea pig friend Felix.

Now Felix, as adorable as he was (he was one of those guinea pigs that had the tufted hair that stuck up everywhere), LOVED his hampster wheel.

And if I put a little treat in front of it, he would stay on that wheel and run, run and run... thinking the faster he ran, the quicker he would get the treat.

Many times I took him off the wheel and showed him the treat, then put him back on, just to see what he would do.

But he never jumped off himself, he just kept running on that damn wheel.

As a kid, I thought it was hilarious that he couldn't see that he could just jump off and get the treat so I'd give him a little belly rub and just give it to him.

But I realised in my early thirties that I too was just like Felix running on that hamster wheel!

I would have a vision of how I wanted my career and life to be, but instead of taking a step sideways and getting clarity, I would continue running, running running.

...and getting nowhere.

I wanted change, but change wasn't coming.  I was stuck on that hamster wheel.

What I know now, is that I needed something and someone to interrupt me and my thoughts and help me take the right actions.

And when that happened...BOOM!  It all clicked into place for me.

I moved into a role that I loved, with a great team and amazing career progression. And I've been able to replicate that time and time again.

So my question to you is - are you a guinea pig on the wheel of your career?

If you are, and you'd like support in getting off that wheel, I'd love to help!

We have a few available spots for a non-obligation career call, where you tell us where you're at in your career and what you're struggling with, and we'll let you know if we have a solution for you.

By the end of the call, if we can't help you, we'll point you in the direction of someone that can.

We have limited spots available this week, so first in best dressed.
