Prioritise High-Impact Actions for Career Success
May 29, 2024When most professional women want a new job, they spend countless hours searching for jobs, and applying for jobs here, there and everywhere.
They try to connect with hiring managers, recruiters and HR teams, and often find themselves not talking to anyone, or talking to more junior HR members.
When a job does come along, they’ll go through a process of updating their resume (without advanced resume training) and subsequently, very little interview practice.
This all results in very little progress.
Months, even years go by, all without any clear path around this “standard” approach.
This is the hunting mice approach.
It involves investing a tremendous amount of time and energy into activities that yield minimal returns.
Job seekers burn out from the repetitive and largely ineffective process.
Time to hunt antelope!
The hunting antelope approach looks totally different.
The idea is that you will take minimal actions that result in people proactively offering you jobs, often without even applying for it.
This is the GCANN method.
I’ll explain this down in the Career Hack section, however, let me show you how it works…
Last week, a client applied this method and got the perfect promotion within 2 weeks.
Let me tell her story real quick…
Sarah was a Product Analyst for a Tier 2 Bank.
She was late-thirties and had been in the role for 5 years.
Her goal: become Senior Product Manager in the next 3 years.
Whilst she’d been spending years hunting mice, one day she mentioned her goal to the Head of Product in her company.
She spoke about why she craved this goal.
Sarah saw an opportunity of building products that drove genuine value to customers, that would help customers save money in a much easier way.
If done in the right way, it would make customers money, increase customers satisfaction significantly, and would increase profits for the bank.
It’s clear she’s a natural strategic thinker, customer focused with a keen eye on profits.
Sarah followed up a week later, shouting the boss a coffee, which is when she was asked if she’d be interested in a Product Manager role, one step away from her 3 year goal.
In this instance, she didn’t apply for the job, or write a resume, or attend an interview.
Instead of pursuing every job posted, she focused on the one big action.
This example was a no brainer for her, she wanted to keep working for the company, and her manager.
And because she followed the exact GCANN method steps properly, she was offered a job in no time.
However, we don’t all want to work for our current organisation or boss.
And there are many ways the GCANN method applies.
Now, I’m not saying applying for jobs, or going through the resume/interview process is not worth doing, in fact, if you do it the right way it’s incredibly effective.
However, if you’re doing this the standard way, it will feel like hunting mice.
