Life Changing Questions
May 22, 2024When I was young, I asked myself amazing questions…
What do I want to become when I’m older? What do I want to learn about? What am I passionate about?
Very hard questions to answer…
Then, when I started working I would ask myself; do I really want to do this? What should I do next? Should I get more educated?
As time went along, I asked different questions…
How can I manage my time better? Why is life so hard? Can I get more time with family and friends? Can I negotiate more salary?
The further I went along, the more questions I suppressed, and after a while, I forgot about most of them.
When I started asking the right questions, I realised the journey I had taken had led me off track.
But, when I did answer these questions authentically, and was honest with myself, I realised I needed to change.
Here are the FOUR types of questions I want you to ask yourself.
Luckily, these should be relatively easy questions to answer.
1. Are you in the right job/career?
To answer this question, you need to be honest about the following:
- Do you wake up excited about your job?
- Are you passionate about what you are working on?
- Does your job spark joy for you?
Whilst you may not know what you want to do, you should know what you don’t want to do.
We spend 40+ years of our lives in jobs, it’s important to answer the fundamental question - do we actually like it?
So, do you?
2. Are you achieving your dreams?
I get so much value in helping women thrive in their careers, and I know I’m fulfilling my purpose.
I spoke with an accountant the other day, who loves saving people from financial heartache - she is fulfilling her dreams.
But are you?
- What do you want to achieve in your career?
- What do you want to be known for?
- Are you working on these now, and are you fully utilising your skills to achieve it?
If you aren’t, you should be honest with yourself.

3. Are you holding yourself back?
Often, we want to ask our boss for something, but we don’t. Or we want to move up the ladder, but we don’t take the specific actions that will get us there (e.g. network more).
So, ask yourself…
- When did you last ask your boss for a payrise, a promotion, or more flexible working arrangements?
- If you want more senior roles, are you network with the right hiring managers and recruiters to get there?
- If you want more responsibility, did you ask for more responsibility?
- Are you applying for the jobs you actually want, or the safe option?
We often don’t ask these questions because we fear we’ll rock the boat, or get an unfavourable response.
But often, people around you just want to see initiative. The things that hold us back aren’t as valid as we think they are.
So, are you holding yourself back?
4. Are you prioritising the right things?
I have young kids, but last year I noticed that I felt I wasn’t spending enough time with them. And when I did my mind was racing so fast I couldn’t slow down to play with them properly which made the mum guilt ever so present.
I heard a stat that by the time our kids leave home, we have already spent 90% of the time we will get with them in person.
We take for granted that we live with them until they leave.
- Does your workload prevent you from spending enough time with family?
- Do you prioritise your mental and personal health (food, exercise, downtime)?
- Do you prioritise friends and fun activities?
Now, after answering all of these questions you might be asking yourself another question…
