GCANN Method
May 31, 2024If you really want people coming to you with job opportunities, you’ll want to implement the GCANN method.
Here it is…
Goal
Firstly, you need to be clear on the goal you want to achieve in the next 2-5 years.
This needs to be a goal that isn’t too short, or too long (hence the 2 - 5 years)
And it needs to tick most of your career blueprint boxes…
Salary, bob title, responsibilities, work/life balance, team dynamic and management alignment.
Connect
You need to make connections with the ‘antelope’!
The antelope are the people who are in charge of making the decisions in the hiring process.
It could be recruiters, but often it’s managers and senior managers whom you know already. Even past colleagues can end up as decision makers.
And your job is to work out who the decision makers are and laser your focus on them.
For example, if you want to land a product role at a bank, building relationships with the chief product officers at the four major banks would be a game-changer.
By cultivating just one of these connections, you can significantly enhance your chances of landing the role you aspire to.
Why?
Because first they’ll know who you are when you do apply, and second you will have built enough trust that they’ll put you through for jobs that aren’t even yet advised.
Alignment
The step involves you aligning that person to your goals, and also you to their work / organisation goals.
Be honest, tell them what you’re wanting to achieve in the next few years.
And, find out what they are trying to achieve… i.e. who do they want in their team? What are they struggling with? What attributes are they looking for in their team members?
If you align your goals, and what they want, you have alignment!
Narrative
Whenever someone meets you it’s an opportunity for you to have them walk away clear on your best qualities.
This forms your narrative.
For Sarah, she knows she’s a natural strategic thinker, customer focused and has a passion for driving profitable outcomes.
Because she knows this about herself, and isn’t afraid to say it, others walk away seeing her in this same way.
Nurture
Once you have this kind of relationship, catching up with them every so often (e.g. every 3-6 months) will keep you front of mind when jobs or promotions do come up.
This is critical to having them think of you whenever a job becomes available.
