Friends In High Places

You've written your killer resume and now you need to get it in the right management hands to win that promotion!

But in the day-to-day world of work, it often feels like there's an invisible barrier between you and the high-flying management team. They're in their exclusive circles, making big decisions that affect your career, seemingly a world away on some corporate retreat.

But guess what?

Cracking into that world and forming genuine bonds with senior management isn't just a pipedream — it's your golden ticket to advancing and scoring those coveted senior roles for yourself.

Here’s a fun, yet impactful way you can connect with leaders to bridge that gap and get noticed (just make sure when you connect with them, it doesn't feel forced, it feels natural):

  • Reconnect: Remember those colleagues who climbed the ranks and now have "Manager" or "Senior" in front of their names on LinkedIn? It's time to get back in touch. But this isn't about asking for favours; it's about rekindling genuine connections. Share updates about your life and career, and show interest in their journey.
  • Let's get personalprofessionally, of course. Share something heartfelt or a personal milestone with them. Maybe you've just completed a marathon, or you've taken up a cause that's close to your heart. It shows you're more than your job title; you're a vibrant individual with passions and pursuits outside the 9-to-5.
  • Dive deeper than the usual "How's work?" Show you care about their professional challenges and achievements. Ask about their latest project, what's been keeping them busy, or how they're going with their team. It’s about building a connection that’s authentic and meaningful.
  • Regular Check-Ins: This isn't about being a constant presence in their inbox but sending thoughtful, occasional check-ins. A quick message to see how they're doing or sharing an article you think they'd find interesting keeps the communication channel open, without it feeling like a chore for either of you.
  • Coffee on Me: Invite them for a coffee catch-up.  It’s a relaxed setting to chat, possibly laugh, and discuss everything from career aspirations to the latest Netflix binge.

Remember, while your career is important, so is the joy of connecting with others.

Don't approach every interaction with a heavy, serious demeanour. A sprinkle of humour and light-heartedness can make these connections more enjoyable and memorable.

So, go ahead, send that (appropriate) meme! ;)
