😥 4 quick tricks to stop burnout

Jun 18, 2024

If you’re a leader or in a senior role and can’t manage burnout, you WILL NOT be successful.

I once believed that in order to be successful, you need to...

  • Take on more responsibility,
  • Work harder than others,
  • Work later than others, and
  • Show no signs of stress.

That was until one day I saw a new approach.

An approach that fundamentally shifted how I behaved in a leadership role.

Today, I challenge your thinking around what it takes to be a leader…

4 leadership traps
that undermine your success

The problem is, early in your career working hard means you get recognition.

So, you continue.

Continue working hard, continue taking on more, and continue working even harder.

Over the years you start to develop a specific set of tools that have you “win” but…

…these are traps.

Let’s go through them.

Trap #1: Perfectionism

It's late at night, your eyes are weary, your back is aching and your head feels like it’s ready to burst...

Still, you persist. Why?

Perhaps in the past you created a piece of work but were given feedback that it wasn’t that great.

Fearing this again, you internally commit to doing a much better job.

Who wants to feel that kind of rejection?  No one.

Over the years your mind doesn’t switch off and you go on a warpath to make everything perfect, vowing never to get negative feedback again.

Trap #2: Reluctance to delegate

You're great at what you do.  You have the technical skills and you got promoted because of it.

But now that you’re a manager, the people who report to you don’t always have that same skill…

So, does it make sense to give them the work?

Logically Yes.  But of course it’s much easier, and faster, to do it yourself.

So you continue to do it, without delegating.  Plus, if you’re a perfectionist from Trap #1, it’s even harder.

Trap #3: Management without support

If I was going to put all my chips on a bet, it would be this…

You become a manager but have been given very little support or training on how to actually lead your team well.

I bet your workload started piling up, and instead of asking (insisting) for the handbook on how to navigate ‘management’, you just got to work putting out all the spot fires.

Trap #4: Saying ‘yes’

If your boss asks you to take on work, how quick do you say ‘YES’?

I don’t blame you because after all, who’s the one that evaluates your performance…?  PLus, as women, we are notorious for not wanting to let people down.

Often, the idea of pushing back just seems too difficult…

So we don’t!

The real problem

The four traps above all signify TWO main problems:

  1. You fear failing, looking bad, or upsetting the status quo OR;
  2. You find it difficult asking for help.

The great news?

There is a different way.  Read the Career Hack section below for some great tips.

Time To Thrive Ladies!

Safeguard The Golden Goose

In Aesop’s timeless tale, a farmer realises that his goose is laying golden eggs.

Thrilled by his newfound wealth, he becomes greedy and decides to slay the goose, hoping to discover a treasure trove of gold within, instead of waiting for each egg to be laid.

However, he discovers no golden eggs inside the goose and loses his source of golden eggs forever.

As a leader, YOU are the golden goose.

Your distinct skills, knowledge and vision are what make you "golden".

If you neglect your well-being by pushing yourself to do more and more, you effectively slay the golden goose…

Meaning that you will burn out and lose your ability to be effective and successful.

That's why being a leader requires you to take care of your physical, mental and emotional health.

Here's some ways to get started.

1) Allocate time for yourself:

Schedule time for activities that recharge you like you would for an important meeting

Ask yourself: What are your non-negotiables that keep you sane?

Walking? Going for a swim? Coffee dates?  Hanging out with friends or family? Knitting? Playing sport?

Block out time in your diary and make it happen.

2) Establish boundaries and assertively communicate them:

It’s ok to set boundaries around your time, energy and availability.

Most people are ok with it as long as you actually communicate it.

Remember that saying no means saying yes to work that truly matters.

3) Strategically assign tasks:

As a leader your time and energy are assets.  Let me repeat: Your time and energy are assets.

Get rid of tasks that don't specifically require your skills or expertise to your team members. Free up your time and develop your team - win/win!

4) Ensure alignment, between your commitments and values:

Not all opportunities hold the same value.

Evaluate each commitment based on how it aligns with your values, priorities and long-term objectives.

Learn to decline things that don't meet these criteria, giving yourself room for what matters.

By safeguarding what's important to you, you'll have the strength, focus and endurance needed to lead effectively and motivate others to do the same.

Shine bright, golden goose!
