🙌 The Best Social Media Post

Sep 02, 2024

I saw this amazing post that sums up people's relationship with work across the span of their life…

Here it is:

"You work 8 hours to live 4.

You work 5 days to enjoy 2

You  work 8 hours to eat in 15 minutes

You work 8 hours to sleep 5.

You work all year just to take a week or two vacation

You work all your life to retire in old age

And contemplate only your last breaths...

Eventually you realise that life is nothing but a parody of yourself practising your own oblivion.

We have become so accustomed to material and social slavery that we no longer see the chains.."

So why do we do it? And how do we stop it?

Read on lovely lady.

Find what you love before it’s too late

I’ve had discussions with my parents early in my career where they've said...

“Em stop worrying about working so hard, just find what you love and your energy will follow”.

When I was younger I understood this as a surface level statement but…

…I have thought of it a hell of a lot more since my mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer last year.

Time is precious.  And what I do with mine is important.

What I’ve realised about that piece of advice now, is that mum (and my dad) simply wanted me to enjoy all the little moments in my life.  Not work myself to death like they did.

To do something I enjoy.

You probably don't know this about me, but early on in my career I was, and loved, being a singer / songwriter.

I wrote songs for shows like Offspring, performed live on Channels 9 & 10 and I toured the country a few times.

And for a moment I thought I was going to “make it” and be a musician for the rest of my life but…

Over time my priorities changed.

Where my energy once thrived, it started to dwindle.

This was the time I got stuck in the grind of my day job and...

...when my parents started to see my spark dwindling.

I still LOVED music, and I play for enjoyment to this day, but it was no longer my career 'thing', and neither was the admin day job I needed to sustain it.

However, after a values realignment, new additions to the family, new passions started to bubble to the surface, and I was open to them. I was compelled to go in a different direction (hello HR and Leadership Coaching!)

I bet you've experienced the same at some point.

During your career there were points you really gave yourself to something.

You had a surge of passion and energy and it gave you a lot of meaning.

And perhaps it’s now gone.  And you’re looking for your next opportunity.

And…whilst everyone is trying to find their "why", do you sometimes feel it’s impossible concept to grasp?

You’re like “what’s my thing” dammit?

But rest assured, there is a way to figure it out.

And I’ve spent years honing my skills, helping other women work it out too.  Because working in a job or career that doesn’t give you energy wastes what precious time you have.

And I don't want you to do that so...
