📈 Rate Your Manager

Aug 26, 2024

“Nice outfit” and “great hair” I would hear from a work colleague…

This so-called “friend” would make insincere compliments every time she wanted me to do a task for her (no other time), as if the compliment would encourage me to do the task.

I look back and cringe…

But there have been times in my work life that I have befriended people who haven’t been very kind to me.

They had this way of cracking jokes with the only intention of making fun at my expense.

I initially played along, but it impacted how I felt about myself, my mindset, mood,  my ability to perform, and ultimately, it limited my options to progress in my role.

And whilst that wasn’t a positive experience, on the flip side, I’ve also been able to work and spend time with other people who have seen the best in me.  People who have given me positive energy, and I have loved it and thrived.

Funnily enough, when I have surrounded myself with great people, I have felt great in myself.  And when I have felt great, I have performed better and my options always opened up.

Managers are exactly the same.

Some managers are great, and you feel like everything is possible but…

…others completely suck.

Today, you get to rate yours.  Let’s do it!

Rate Your Manager!

Gangly, dorky Em cringes at the memory of school when we had a “hot or not” scorecard for our year level, BUT I do love a scorecard when we implement it for your manager!

But Youre Like Really Pretty Mean Girls GIF

That’s right ladies, unlike high school, it is 100% necessary to rate your manager.

Why?

Because it’s crucial to determine if your manager is going to be a force for good, or bad throughout your career.

Over the years, I’ve made it my  mission to surround myself with positive (and emotionally evolved) people.

And I don’t mean people who simply blow wind up my skirt…

I mean people who tell me when I’m genuinely making a great contribution and who support me learning, growing and developing and…

Give me feedback when I’m not.

The big difference is great managers will always hold me to a high standard and push me in the right direction.

This is what you want in a manager, right?

So, it’s time to rate your boss.

Read the below questions (there are three key parts) and score them from 1 to 5.

1 = Never, 5 = Always

Part 1

  1. Do they make an effort to know you? (Your passion, personal life, interests, weaknesses and strengths)
  2. Do they provide you with both positive and constructive feedback?
  3. Do they provide constructive feedback as an opportunity for you?
  4. Do they put you in positions to leverage your best qualities?
  5. Do they provide you support when they give you a task that isn’t one of your strengths?
  6. Do they have a plan to support your career progress?
  7. Do you feel inspired by the vision they set, or the way you are contributing towards your own goals (personal, career or passions)?

Part 1 is designed to understand how well they care and want to support you.

Rating:

  • Below 20: you might find you’ll struggle to find joy and opportunities in the company.
  • Between 20 - 40: they are doing a reasonable job as a boss but there are some areas for improvement.
  • Above 40, and they are definitely above average… and honestly they are probably worth working with and leveraging if you have opportunities to move up within the organisation.

However, reserve your judgement until you answer part 2…

Part 2

  1. When they are stressed, do they put extra pressure on you?
  2. Do they play you off against others?
  3. Do they put you down?
  4. Do they undermine your work?
  5. Do they gaslight you?
  6. Do they do things that cross your personal line?
  7. Do they expect you to work at unreasonable times?
  8. Do they tend to take advantage of you?

Part 2 is how they will actively do things to hurt or harm you (even if unintentionally).

Rating:

Above 15: Your boss may not be such a great influence on you.

Above 30: Lovely lady, consider your options!

I’d love to know how you scored your current manager.  Hit reply and let me know!
